Honors and Standard English I
  • Warm-up
  • Literary terms vocabulary review
  • Presentation of poems (done for homework 2 class periods ago!)
  • Poetry Analysis 1: "The Fish" by Marianne Moore
    • We practiced our analysis skills by reading and annotating "The Fish" by Marianne Moore together as a class. We will practice this kind of analysis several more times, both independently and as a group, before we right our 4th quarter analysis paper! 
  • Progress Reports and graded work distributed; also a copy of "End of the Year Calendar" was handed out for students to know upcoming assignments! 
  • HW: NONE!

  • Begin writing "Fill-in-the-Blank Material Imagination Poem," based off TWO of your favorite poems from the handout!
  • HW: Choose TWO of your favorite poems from the handout; write, edit, and polish YOUR versions of the poems and bring them to class on Monday/Tuesday!

  • Romeo & Juliet: Act V, scene i
    • We read scene i of Act V together in class. We also began working on a worksheet looking at imagery in this act and how it contributes to a theme we identified in the scene. We will finish working with this sheet during next class--be prepared to turn your ideas into a full analysis paragraph! 
  • Library -- SSR
    • Everyone went to the library to check out their own SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) book. We completed our first SSR reflection before the end of class!
    • Be sure to start bringing your SSR book everyday. For fourth quarter, we will begin to have SSR AT LEAST once per week to help strengthen our reading endurance for our End of Course exam coming up soon!
  • HW: Deliver parent letter to your parent or guardian!

  • Concept Card: Wordskills 4
    • Today we created our first concept card. On the front of a notecard, we wrote 1 word part and drew a picture to represent it. On the back, we wrote the definition, related words (words that contain that word part, and a sentence using one of those related words). We made sure that our card contained color!
  • Romeo & Juliet: Act V, scene i

    • We finished preparing our evidence for the debate and then had our first class seminar on the topic! Everyone spoke at least once to share their opinion. If you missed this, see me before or after school/class for a make-up assignment.

    • We read the next 15 or so pages of Monster and answered a few guided questions along the way. See me to get this worksheet!

  • I also talked with each class about "where we are" in our Romeo and Juliet and Lord of the Flies units. I appreciate your patience as I organize the next two weeks for us!

  • Monster: Read pages 46-64; complete discussion questions
  • Racism debate
    • In-class debate centered on the question: Does racism still exist in America? We found evidence to support our claims and backed it up with explanations on our debate handout! 
  • SSR 1 (sustained silent reading--we all chose a book and read for 10 minutes silently at the end of class! Each time we do this we will also complete a short reading response. See me to get this handout!).
